The Sputnik Chair's design is rooted in the simplicity and effectiveness of the Sputnik satellite. Just as the satellite's only function was to send bips to Earth, the chair's design is stripped of all superfluous elements. Its four asymmetric feet, inspired by the satellite's antenna, ensure a flawless contact with the ground, reflecting Sangouard's commitment to functional design.
What sets the Sputnik Chair apart is its timeless quality and the use of basic materials. Made out of hand-cast aluminum and steel, the chair demonstrates how these materials can be used with elegance. The chair's rudimentary aspect is intentional, showcasing the humility of the artist. The chair's dimensions mirror those of the satellite, with a diameter of 58 cm for the aluminum seating.
The production of the Sputnik Chair was a technical challenge. The asymmetric incurved feet, made out of steel, had to be strong enough to ensure stability while maintaining a thin appearance. The project, which started in December 2015, took nine months to complete, with the chair being presented in Paris in September 2016 for the Paris Design Week.
The Sputnik Chair is not just a piece of furniture, but an interaction piece that can fit into various interiors, from industrial to contemporary. The use of brut steel, a strong material, ensures the chair's durability over time. The chair's design, while simple, is a testament to Sangouard's technical expertise and artistic skill.
Harold Sangouard's Sputnik Chair is a remarkable design that has been recognized for its creativity and professional excellence. The chair's unique properties and the challenges overcome in its creation demonstrate Sangouard's commitment to innovative design. With the Sputnik Chair, Sangouard has successfully transformed a basic material into an elegant and timeless piece of furniture.
